EDUC 2120 LESSON 2

In lesson two of education 2120 we were to look at a hate map in Georgia. The hate map showed different racial hate groups that were in existence in Georgia. This lesson we also discussed the question of whether proms should be segregated or not. This lesson had numerous questions that required very broad explanations. During this lesson we were also required to present research material.

Should Proms Be Segregated?

      • I do not believe that proms should be segregated. I believe that as Americans we must learn how to work, learn, and even celebrate as one people. I also believe that is important for all Americans to learn how to do things together so that later on down the road we can all work together to better the world we live in. It is a sad thing that so many people even in 2015 still can’t get along with a person because of their skin color. I think all school functions should be multiracial and multicultural.

    • Why do some students not feel welcome at their high school proms?

    • I believe that some students don’t feel welcome to their own proms because of the way they’re treated at school prior to the prom. I also believe that some students who may not have dates may not feel welcome as well. The ways many different students are picked on or poked fun at can cause them to become anti social. When a student is pressed and pressed they began to feel unwelcomed or even unwanted by some of their peers. I also believe some students even drop out of school because of the way their treated no student is stupid to graduate but some are made to feel like they’re not capable of graduation.

    • What could school officials do to ensure that the needs of a diverse group of students are met at school proms and other school activities?

      •  One of the biggest things school officials could do to ensure that all groups of students feel welcome is to invite everyone to the school functions. I’ve saw at church with men’s fellowship that some men will not come unless they feel a personal invitation from someone else. You can say everyone is invited but when you make a point to invite and encourage attendance you can really improve the numbers at any gathering. Another way to ensure all groups needs are met is to invite the students to give feedback as to how they would’ve felt better being there and truly try to make it an enjoyable experience for the students.

    •

    • Would you ever be in favor of a segregated prom? Why or why not?

      • I would never be in favor of a segregated prom. The main reason I wouldn’t be in favor is because I fully believe that people have to learn how to get along. I have many friends who a different race and we can all seem to go and do without any problem at all. If we segregate the proms all over America we are spitting in the face of every man that fought and died so that all men could be equal in America. We can’t afford to go through all the struggles that this country has already been through to get to where we are today.

    • Regarding the Hate map, select Georgia in the state text box - a list of current hate groups will be provided. By clicking on some of the hate groups, provide a description of at least two (2) different types of hate groups that are still in existence and why they were formed. You might want to provide a location as well as a description. The response to this question should be at least two (2) full paragraphs.

      • The first hate group I clicked on in Georgia was the Klu Klux Klan that is in Rochelle Georgia. The KKK was for in December of 1865. Their initial goal was to do away with black people, but they have also done violence to immigrants, Jews, gays and lesbians their most recent target however was the Catholics. They formed during the reconstruction period after the Civil War to intimidate blacks. They’re committed many different hate acts including lynching, rapes, tar and feathering.

      • The second group is the League of the South located in Statesboro Georgia. The League of the South was formed in 1994. They believe that only white people can run this country and state. The group once sent radical messages to South Carolina governor about removing the confederate flag form the capital and cause it to be left there. In 2009 the League claimed to have 9,000 members.

Research Question: How many members are currently in the Klu Klux Klan and what are their new targets?

Research Analysis:

Through the research I’ve done I found that there are between 5,000 and 8,000 KKK members in America. It was estimated in the1960’s that the Klan had 60,000 members. The number of Klan groups has diminished from 210 to 150 in the last few years. I found that the KKK is one of the largest hate groups that exist in America. In 2014 the KKK began rallying in South Carolina against illegal immigrants. They began to send out candy and fliers that said, “Say our land, join the Klan.” The KKK stemmed from hate for the blacks but down through the years have refocused onto different groups some of which include Catholics and illegal immigrants.

One Klan member, Chris Backer, made the statement that the Klan isn’t out to harm the blacks anymore they are now out to do away with all illegal immigrants who are taking over the USA. The KKK has changed its approach and target in the recent years from the black hatred to now protesting other cause such as illegal immigration and homosexuality. The KKK feels as if it is their responsibility to correct the things that the government doesn’t feel the need to step into.

Research Summary:

Through my research of the Klu Klux Klan I’ve learned numerous things, some things that I agree with and other things that I do not agree with. It is still sad to me that even with our society being at the point that it is there are still people that use violent acts to get their point across. While I agree that all people need a voice and a way to express themselves I do not believe it is right for another group to suffer in order for a different group to feel expressed. I am however glad to see that the gap between the most racist of white men and black men is being bridged. It gives me hope that one day there will be a nonracist America.
