Field Work 1:

Date: 4/17/15

West Green Elementary

Classroom setting 5 hours:

After my visit on Thursday I decided to go back to school on Friday. Friday was a lot like Thursday was just trying to review for the Georgia Milestone. We continued on with the small group discussions and working together. During my second day at the elementary school I continued to lean more and more toward the elementary school. As I became more and more involved with these students I realized the more I enjoyed working with the smaller children. The greatest asset to elementary school to me is the ability to be so personal with the students. Throughout the day i watched students from all different walks of life go through the same test and same preparation and I was amazed that all these different kids could work together so well.

Throughout my days as an elementary school teacher I really enjoyed myself. The more time I spent with these kids the more and more I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. I had always thought that an elementary school teacher wasn’t much more than a baby sitter but after spending two days in the classroom and in teacher meetings I found myself enjoying it more than I have ever enjoyed middle or high school. I believe that after my time spent in the elementary school I would rather pursue a career in elementary school than middle school.

Field Work 2:

4/20/15

West Green Elementary

Classroom 5 hours

On my final visit to the elementary I reconfirmed to myself that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. For many years I’ve taught the six to eight year old boys in Sunday school and Royal Rangers and I’ve always really enjoyed it but I never thought I would want to teach in elementary school. On Monday we continued on test review for the upcoming Georgia Milestone and the closer we got to the starting day the more nervous the teachers seemed to be. I watched as panic seemed to sit in on every teacher and they were all depressed looking but the kids were advancing so well that they were beginning to become relieved. I was very impressed that with this being the third day of them being in the groups it seemed like the kids had a built in clock to tell them when to move to the next group, especially if their group was next to the computers.

On this day however we did have one misunderstanding between two boys and a girl and some choice language was used. I feel like this was great experience to see how the teachers go about handling situations and I was also able to watch the entire process of discipline that occurs between teachers, principals, and parents. I feel like this was a great experience and I also felt like the teachers I was with gave me a great example of proper ways to handle the situation. I was very thankful  to West Green elementary for the time I was allowed to spend at  their school and I’m also thankful to their teachers for being great examples of what great teachers are.
